Workshop: Creativity, Memory and Place with Catherine Cole

Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts, Woolley Room
This workshop explores the fusion between creativity, ideas, memory and place and offers participants new ways of thinking about how they write. A series of discussion topics and writing exercises will draw on the ways in which writers use their sensory experiences to write. Participants will be encouraged to use memory to gather ideas for their work, including those ineffable moments - scents, music, touch – which offer more than just remembered events.

Vrasidas Karalis’ Recollections of Mr Lascaris relate Vrasidas Karalis’ personal recollections of discussions and meetings with Manoly Lascaris, Patrick White’s life-partner. Catherine Cole and A D Hope shared a lively correspondence and a deep and lasting friendship in a mentor-apprentice relationship. They provide new perspectives of two great Australian writers and their considerable legacy.

AD Hope was a world-renowned poet when Catherine Cole, a young undergraduate student of Australian literature sent a polite letter asking for a meeting. That bold step sparked a lively correspondence between the two that continued from 1983 to Hope’s death in 2000. Catherine Cole talks to Charlotte Wood.
